A Pet For The Bug

Meet our newest addition, Sweetie Pie. Though I was sure his name was Chester, apparently I was misinformed. If ever a child needed a pet, it's my bug. She gravitates toward animals like magnets to their mate. Unfortunately in our house that has been a difficult task to accomplish (nothing like 500sq. ft., two parents with different allergy's and a busy street to limit your options). Yesterday I decided maybe we would just go get a Guinea pig. Too big to squish and didn't take all the preparation and expense of the angora rabbits I keep thinking about. (Their fiber producing abilities have no bearing on my thoughts of how much she would love one of course.) We arrived at the pet store only to discover she found an animal she doesn't like. Guinea pigs. Not that I blame her, I have never been a fan myself. I find myself compulsively wanting to comb their mussed up fur. Obviously ties into some compulsion for neatness I have to talk to my therapist about. Anyway. So after looking around, we discovered she loves rats. Enter Chester, soon to be renamed Sweetie Pie. He is sweet, smart, soft, furry, likes people, and the Bugs little heart was lost. Deciding that this pet was for her after all, we took the leap. Both girls are so tickled they can't stop smiling and talking about him. The bug actually cried herself to sleep last night because she missed him and didn't want to have to go to sleep and not hold him. (No mama is not into bed sharing!) He reminds me of my childhood gerbil, without the jumping part, and I hope they get half the memories from him that I have from Casey. Tonight he is keeping me company as I blog his story. The pet shop lady was right, he is a lucky rat!

  1. Oh boy! No rats for us, the desert lizard is enough. Congrats to the Bug.
